Friends of Herring River
Wellfleet and Truro, Massachusetts

If you have not volunteered in the past and wish to be involved in this outdoor, springtime activity (April 1-May 31), please contact John Duane: You can sign up for a 10 minute count within any 4 hour time period. John is sending out the protocols, sign up sheets and the excel data sheet to all those interested in participating. He can also put you in contact with a volunteer who can show you the ropes.

Join us on Tuesday, March 17, 4:30pm at the Wellfleet Public Library for the annual Herring Count Workshop conducted by FHR Board Member, Dr. Barbara Brennessel. Learn about the information obtained from the past 10 years of Wellfleet's herring counts. Presentations will include river herring life history and ecology, attempts to repair upper Herring River culverts and the latest Herring Management Plan from the New England Fisheries Management Council.

There will also be opportunities for volunteering for Wellfleet's Annual Herring Count at Old Kings Highway on the Herring River. Volunteers will get a review of the protocol for counting river herring and information about entering count data.

Bring your calendars! Sign up sheets will be available.
